Classes and Lessons

At The Music Academy for Special Learners, we teach students to play instruments or sing by engaging their love of play, and visual and auditory intelligences. We are passionate about helping children and their families experience the benefits and shared happiness that come with a person’s SUCCESS in music!

Open to the public for ALL individuals of ALL ages and abilities!

Our exciting music curriculum is based upon a variety of  teaching techniques we have named Visual Music Concepts®. This method has been acclaimed by medical professionals and in the special needs support services community. It has been proven effective for all students, early beginners, children, and adults who are looking for a unique, creative approach to learning music.

Whether it be an instrument or art, our experienced staff provide personalized instruction to promote the development of each student’s artistic abilities. No previous experience required. Lessons can range from a first experience to professional audition preparation. Individual lessons focus on developing technical abilities, theory knowledge, and expanding repertoire on the student’s selected musical instrument or art medium.

Music Classes

Music Classes are customized experiences to promote each participant’s ability to engage within their community through music. Each class is designed for those who seek to learn a variety of skills or develop their ability to take more formal lessons in the future. These classes can explore a variety of instruments, singing, improvising, composing, music and movement, and much more. Music classes are facilitated by our music staff to utilize their unique training providing the best experiences to fit the ever-changing individuals we serve.

There are no prerequisites to participate in community classes. People of all ages and abilities are welcome.

Art Classes

Art classes are flexible, education, and recreation focused classes designed for those who seek to learn a variety of art mediums and skills. Each class is constructed based on the interests of the student to foster their artistic abilities. Classes may include drawing, ceramics, painting, sketching, crafting, and more using a variety of creative materials. Students may learn color theory, drawing perspectives, shading, textures, brushwork, and more! Community art classes are facilitated by our art staff to utilize their unique training providing the best experiences to fit the ever-changing individuals we serve.

Sign Language Classes

These interactive classes teach participants basic American Sign Language through favorite songs and familiar stories. Begin to learn a 2nd language or help bridge the gap between two other languages through sign! Engage in active music making and/or role play, brining songs and stories to life while developing ASL vocabulary.

Musical Theatre Classes

Musical theatre classes are explore various aspects of musical theatre in an easily accessible manner to all participants. Classes may include monologue themes, dressing as characters, themed days, singing, dancing, coaching, acting, and even college audition preparation.

The Music Academy for Special Learners celebrates our students’ musical achievements with Seasonal Music Recitals for family and friends. All our students are invited to participate!

We have advocates for music in schools everywhere, so The Music Academy also assists with New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Festival Preparation.
